Nina Baksmaty began exploring her desire to combine her African heritage with western style clothing which led her to launch her label, KoshieO. Albeit in its infancy, KoshieO caught the attention of Franca Sozzani and has been featured in Vogue Italia. KoshieO has worked with celebrities such as Michelle Williams of Destiny’s child and Eva Marcille America’s top fashion model.
Nina is evolving as a designer and has proven to be a dedicated scholar of her craft. She is continually honing her skills to perfect the fine art of cutting and draping fabric. In addition, her superb tailoring, understanding of fit issues and masterful detailing, distinguishes her from her peers.
Nina grew up in a Ghana, West Africa. Her artistic spirit revealed itself early on, when she spent hours with her mother, a well-known designer, at her shop. Her fascination with fabric, cut, and design grew further, when she accompanied her mother to buy supplies for her shop attending trunk shows/fashion shows with her mother. At this point, Nina spent all her free time at her mother’s clothier. Witnessing the evolution of clothes making from the culmination of skill, passion and pride, further heightened her interest, perception and appreciation of designing. However, it wasn’t until much later, that she even considered becoming a designer.
Her father worked as an engineer and her mother a designer, so it is not surprising that her father encouraged her to pursue a degree in the sciences. After obtaining her bachelor’s degree in Biology, Nina worked for two years and finally gave in to the design bug she couldn’t shake off.
